This is Dan Gearino, a longtime volunteer for Cartoon Crossroads Columbus. I’m writing today in my capacity as CXC’s treasurer, which means I’m the person who makes sure we have the resources each year to put on the show and keep it free to the public. Our budget is about $100,000, which is small compared to most festivals and nonprofits, but feels like a lot when starting at zero.

Here’s an update on our fundraising campaign. Short version: We’ve raised $5,380 since June 30, in which every dollar gets matched up to $7,500 by our co-founder Lucy Shelton Caswell. That’s really good, and our goal is in sight.

But first, let’s talk comics. Lately, I’ve been enjoying everything Paco Roca does (check him out!), and if you ever ask me about the comics of Michel Rabagliati or Keiler Roberts, buckle up, I’m not going to shut up for a while.

This year, we expect that about half of our funding is going to come from individual donations (the other major sources are foundations like the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and corporate sponsors). A good chunk of our individual donations come from a half dozen major donors.

But the difference between a successful fundraising season and an unsuccessful one is often a matter of smaller donations of $20 and up.

I’d like to see us raise $2,120 by Friday, Aug. 19, which would get us to $7,500 and mean we’re getting the most out of our matching campaign. So if you haven’t given yet, consider sending $20 or more our way.

Now… back to comics. Have I ever told you that Justice League of America #200 might be the finest single issue of any comic book?
