Join us for a conversation with best-selling children’s cartoonist Raina Telgemeier, presented in partnership with the Billy Ireland.
One of the most beloved all-ages cartoonists of her generation, Raina Telgemeier returns to CXC in conjunction with the career-spanning exhibition Facing Feelings: The Art of Raina Telgemeier, which is currently on display at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. Joining Telgemeier in conversation about her career and the exhibition is Anne Drozd, Billy Ireland Museum curator and curator of the exhibition.
Telgemeier’s many accolades include six Eisner Awards, and her book Drama received a Stonewall Book Award in 2013. Her graphic novels Smile (2010), Drama (2012), Sisters (2014), Ghosts (2016), and Guts (2019) all became New York Times bestsellers. She also created four popular graphic novel adaptations of Ann M. It’s difficult to summarize John Jennings contribution to comics without strongly recommending a 15 to 20 minute Google search. Eisner Award winner, Hugo Award winner, NYT bestselling author, illustrator, organizer, professor, scholar, theorist, and director/curator of Abrams Imprint Megascope, John Jennings, will be joining Bryan Moss to discuss his creative practice with a focus on his work in literary adaptation. Having worked as an illustrator, writer, and editor on several adaptation projects, the scope of what it takes to translate another’s vision from one medium to another can be grounded through a brief conversation between John Jennings and Bryan Moss.
Ohio history told in comics: ComicBook.com’s Christian Hoffer talks with Eisner, Harvey, and Angoulême Prix Révélation prize-winning cartoonist Derf Backderf about his newest book, the meticulously-researched Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio, which The Library Journal called, “Required reading for all Americans.”

A presentation from NCS President and New Yorker cartoonist Jason Chatfield.
“When I grow up, I want to be a cartoonist and spend all my time trying to run a business!” said no one ever. But, with the established markets for cartooning in flux, the work cartoonists do away from the drawing board/tablet is more important than ever. In this session, Chatfield will share some of what he’s learned about finding and growing a direct audience of true fans (with and without social media), the power of combinatory skills, getting paid what we’re worth, finding your ‘enough,’ and building a cartooning business fit for the 21st century using Substack so you can spend more time doing the thing you actually like: Drawing cartoons!
